London is a Mecca for business and leisure travellers throughout the world, and quite rightly so. There is so much diversity, beauty and exciting things to do and see in London. The only downside is that London is one of the most expensive cities in the world! Don't panic, with a little creativity and ingenuity, staying in London on a budget is possible.

Our team at Quality London Apartments have compiled some ideas to help all travellers visit London without breaking the bank.

Tip 1: Shop around when booking for a taxi or airport transfer service. Prices vary wildly so best to not leave it to the last minute. Ask your travel agent or someone you know in London and they can direct you in the right direction. But do not try to cut too many corners by going with an unlicensed taxi, as this is dangerous and potentially hazardous to your health.

Tip 2: Travel by underground station or buses instead of taxis. Buy Oyster card for pay as you go, or if you are staying in London for 7 nights or for longer, you can purchase a weekly travel card. Buses are generally cheaper than train, so if you don't mind a slightly longer journey (dependent on road traffic) a bus fare start from £1.10 one way instead of £2.20 train fare.

Tip 3: Needless to say shop around for a hotel promotion to ensure that you get the best deal or just call them up directly to negotiate. In hotels, there is usually a mini bar, but don't eat or drink anything in there as the prices are extortionate. You can buy some of your own drinks and snacks from a local shop and replace them in the mini bar for your own consumption. Tip 4: Be prepared to stay in accommodation out of the central areas of London. Some good areas, with convenient underground links are Kilburn, Canary Wharf, Stratford, and Fulham. Areas like Oxford Street and Mayfair are very expensive because of their location.

Tip 5: Avoid overpriced tourist traps and visit the free museums, galleries and parks. Free museums include Victoria and Albert, Science museum and Natural History museum. Chinese New Year
A spectacular annual celebration in the heart of London's Chinatown, which attracts large crowds. London Parade
This New Year's Day parade is a sight to remember, because it is really bright, loud and hugely entertaining. Is this possibly the world's most famous boat race? Starting with the first race in 1830, the two universities have never lost their rivalry and hence this grand tradition keeps everyone enthralled even though it only lasts for 18 minutes or so. One of the best places to view the race is at Hammersmith as it is half way for the race and there are places where you can rest with friends and have some food! Flora London Marathon
Makes me tired just imagining those poor thousands of people running for 26 miles, which is why I prefer to be a spectator at this world famous marathon. From its humble beginning in 1981, the London marathon has grown exponentially to attracting over 35,000 runners, half of which is running for charity, and half a million of spectators.
It is also a great chance to spot some famous people as they run for charity, especially if they are wearing a costume. The race starts around 9am at Greenwich Park and ends outside Buckingham Palace. www.london-marathon.co.uk

Coin Street Festival
One of the gems of this city is the South Bank, because on a beautiful day, you can see the vista of the city and the Thames while listening to free street music. The show takes place on the second Saturday of November annually and begins at the Guildhall at around 11am. There are horses, floats, bands and the Lord Mayor's gilded 18th century coach. Christmas Tree

New Year's Eve
In the old days, it was tradition to congregate in Trafalgar Square and bathe in ice cold water from the fountain. But as this became more and more crowded, thus dangerous, the focus has moved toward the fireworks on the embankment and the London Eye. To get to the Embankment go the Embankment station, for Trafalgar Square go the Leicester Square station. There is no other way to say goodbye to the old year and in with the new, but if you are scared of crowds, this is not for you as it can become claustrophobic.

A pretty unusual twist on this truly English tradition, Yauatcha offers 'oriental afternoon tea' at this funky dim sum restaurant. Start with a dim sum selection such as baked venison puff , then move on to scones, gateaux and a plate of fresh fruits (£24.50). Blue teas are on the menu and desserts include a chocolate brownie with raspberry and red pepper coulis.

Nicole's

But, there is good news amongst all this bad news. Prices have dropped in London and all companies are bending over backwards for your business. We have compiled a few tips for travellers seeking to visit London economically.

Shop 'til you drop
Take advantage of the drop in sterling and visit London to buy your Christmas presents. At time of press the pound was 1.55 against the dollar, so if you are a traveller from the US, there is rich pickings, especially luxury goods like handbags and designer clothes.

Hotels Accommodation
Hotels are slashing prices by at least 20% so it is worth shopping around. I find Expedia.com a great directory to find all the latest hotel promotions. Also don't be afraid to call the hotel directly and negotiate.

London Serviced Apartments
Serviced London apartments are a really cost effective choice of accommodation, even when compared to hotel promotional rates. For example, if a 4 star hotel rate is £140 per night for a double room which works out to be £70 per person. Whilst a one bedroom apartment at the rate of £150 per night and can accommodate up to 3 people, so that is only £50 per person. You will also enjoy more space with a separate bedroom, lounge and kitchen.
For families, it is even more of a good value choice. For example, an average two bedroom apartment is £220 per night so that is £44 per person for 5 people staying.

Transport

The Prospect of Whitby

Fancy a bit of rough or a walk in the criminal underworld of smugglers? Then try popping into the formerly named 'The Devil's Tavern' for a pint and you will be following in the footsteps of 17th century smugglers. The pub was a notorious den for smugglers and ironically was burnt to a crisp in the 18th century. In its place was a new pub renamed sedately 'The Prospect of Whitby' after a ship usually moored there. Reflecting the 'ye olde' English feel of the past, the interior is decorated with relics of ships such as ropes and lanterns. For those suffering from claustrophobia, the terrace may be a better choice with plenty of fresh air and an excellent prospect of the river Thames.

The Anchor

This quaint pub, close to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, has been around since the 1600s and its claim to fame is as the place where Samuel Pepys safely watched the Great Fire of London ravaged the city. The famous diarist mentioned in his diary that he sat in this pub and 'watched the fire grow'.
Like any other historical building, the pub has suffered the wears and tears throughout the years and in the late 1600s it was rebuilt following a fire. Since then different owners have added to the character of the buildings making it a really interesting combination of various styles.

Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese

145 Fleet Street, City of London, EC4A 2BU.

This Pub may possibly be the most famous in London, as it has been a favourite haunt for all the illustrious names of literature and Fleet street writers. Famous names include Charles Dickens, Thackeray, Oscar Wilde, Arthur Conan Doyle and many others. It even has a stuffed parrot named Polly in the bar which was famous for mimicking customers, so much so that upon its death it was mentioned in the BBC.
The pub is thought to have been built on a 13th century monastery as there are remnants from this time in the cellars. There was an inn going back all the way to mid 1500s which was destroyed in the Fire of London in 1666, and the Ye Olde Cheshire cheese as it is known was rebuilt in 1667.
The pub is a maze of wooden beams, low ceilings and open fireplaces which is very cozy and quaint, or claustrophobic, dependent on your tolerant level.

The George Inn
77 Borough High Street, Borough, London, SE1 1NH.

Situated in Southwark near London Bridge this is London's only surviving coaching inn. There was a coaching inn here since 1600s, but after damage from a fire in 1676 it was rebuilt. The demise of the George Inn as coaching inn coincided with the increase in rail travel which unfortunately had a negative effect on coach travel. Sadly, Great Northern Railway destroyed large parts of the George Inn to convert into warehouses, but luckily the south side of the inn was left alone and is not listed by the National Trust.

When the word 'Chelsea' is uttered, what are the associations to you? Many people associate Chelsea with 'Sloane rangers' or the refined Chelsea harbour. But what about 'innovative', 'bohemian' and 'punk revolution'? I know, it is surprising to even think of refined Chelsea in this way, but as you will see, the area's history shows its pull of artists, writers and rock and roll types.

Rural Chelsea 1600s
London, many hundreds of years previous was a fraction in size of what we now consider London. Chelsea was a largely rural area where the rich aristocrats would escape to for a holiday. King Charles II was reportedly a regular visitor, and the King's Road shopping High street was named so because the king used this road to access his palace his London.
From 1600s to 1800s Chelsea was also a market to Londoners. Another famous culinary delight with its origins in Chelsea is the Chelsea bun which is made of long, thin strips of pastry sprinkled with currants and wound into a bun.

Bohemian Renaissance
During the 1800s Chelsea became a hotspot for the bohemian crowds. All the artists of renown crowded to the tiny Chelsea borough. Famous painters made Chelsea their home, such as the famous Pre-raphaelite painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti, and John Singer Sargent. Other famous writers in Chelsea were the author of Gulliver's Travels, Jonathan Swift and political writer Thomas Carlyle.
It would be another hundred years or so until Chelsea experienced a second renaissance as an area of innovation.

Rock & Roll Sixties
During the 60s and 70s, the King's Road became the new focus for the punk movement headed by Vivienne Westwood with her boutique shop SEX. The shop is still on the King's Road, albeit it now seems quite tame and has lost some of its shock value. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones have also stayed in Chelsea throughout the 60s.

2000+
Chelsea is now a 'respectable' high street with an increase of upmarket shops, especially concentrated in the new Duke of York Square where you will find cafes, ice cream parlour, clothes shops. The innovation and artistic movement have long de-camped to other areas of London, but Chelsea is still indeed an idyllic and elegant destination for all travellers.

Borough Market
Over 250 years old, the market is on the south of the river Thames and near London Bridge. All of the great meat, poultry, game, cheeses are all made by small companies/farmers which makes it a real exciting experience compared to visiting a standard supermarket. Favourites are the artisan breads, cheeses from France and the game pies. But do bring lots of money because it is not cheap as it used to be.

Tyburn Tree – gruesome gem so only the strong of stomach read on
Enjoy shopping in Oxford street and lingering around Marble Arch? Well, 400 years ago you would not have wanted to be visiting this particular spot. On the junction of Edgware Road and Marble arch is a plaque which marks the old site of the Tyburn Tree – the main place of execution in London. It is estimated that about 45,000 people were executed at that very spot. Of course, it wasn't a real tree but a wooden construct with three legs, which made it sturdy enough for mass executions.

Spitalfields Market
It is such as shame that this market is not given the recognition it deserves. There has been a market here for hundreds of years, but it was a haven for the French Huguenots refugees during 17th century, then Irish and Jewish settlers. The combination of so much history and modern day companies living side by side is quirky but leaves an indelible mark on the traveller. Now the market has a brilliant collection of eclectic shops, butchers, restaurants which reflects its heritage.

18 Folgate Street, Spitalfields E1
I cannot rave enough about this unusual gem in London. It was designed by an artist called Dennis Servers who wanted to re-create the home of a 17th century Huguenots family. He even created the characters of the Jervis family. It is not a museum, but a work of experiental art, which is akin to the observer going back in a time machine to 500 years previous. Be immersed in the smell, sight and sounds of a Huguenots residence. If you are lucky, you can spot the creator himself.

London Embankment
Not listed as an attraction in its own right, but there is something very romantic about strolling along the embankment. A good 30 minutes walk with splendid views of the river Thames on its relentless course, the Oxo tower, Royal Festival Hall, and London Eye. If you recall in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral, Hugh Grant's character tried desperately to express his love for the Andie McDowell character. They were standing on the embankment for this scene. Get off at Embankment Tube.

London Apartments: Helpful checklist when searching for serviced apartments

I am amazed at some travellers and mildly shocked at how ready they are to reserve a serviced apartment without asking in-depth questions. You would not buy a television without finding out its screen size, colour controls etc. Yet some travellers are ready to spend £1000+ without asking questions?! In response to this, I have compiled a list to help you ask the apartment supplier or agent.

Details about the apartment

1. Is the apartment modern or in the classic style?
2. How many bedrooms? Are they double, queen, king or twin beds?
3. Can an extra person sleep on an extra bed or sofa bed? Charges.
4. Full kitchen or small kitchenette
5. Can I choose a specific apartment or not?
6. What is included in the accommodation rate?

Booking procedure

1. What is the cancellation policy?
2. Payment procedures, deposits etc
3. What if I need to check out early? Or need to extend my stay?
4. What I do not like the apartment allocated?
5. Payment methods
6. I do not trust booking online, do you have an alternative method?
7. How will my credit/debit card details be stored? When is it destroyed?
8. Checking in details
9. Do you offer assistance to book transport or advice about the destination?

This is by no means an exhaustive list but a good starting point. You are the guest, so any supplier/agent worth their salt will be happy to help you with all correct information. Do not be afraid to ask, because after all, it is your money.

London Apartments: To Book Early? Or not?

Many people have contacted us to try and reserve serviced apartments far in advance and have been shocked to discover that we cannot confirm a booking! It is hard for mums and dads trying to be super organized to understand why we cannot confirm an apartment six months in the future. I have been thinking about this situation and hope I can explain and help future travellers.

Firstly, I wish to encourage travellers to start their research and enquiries early. This is good! But be aware that if you need a 3 nights stay, 6 months ahead, not may serviced apartments will allow you to book. This is because the apartments company are afraid that a short stay booking would block out a bigger booking for stays of 2 months. If your booking is a short lead (i.e for 1 week ahead)then that is fine. Unlike hotels, there are only a small number of apartments in any building and the management company do not have much scope to be creative with their inventory allocation.

Secondly, Not all apartments are as strict with early bookings. Some apartotels are much more flexible. If you are unsure of which apartments, ask your agent as they will know immediately.

Thirdly, My advice is also to keep in contact with your agent and they can advise you when you can book an apartment. For example, a client contacted me in November 2007 and wished to book a short stay for February 2008. I advised her that this was not possible at the time, but contacted her again in early January 2008 and helped her to confirm an apartment.

I hope this does help travellers. It is good to start research early, but do keep in mind that you may not be able to confirm a booking until a few months closer to the arrival date.

Keep cheques and cards separate

Walking around London

Ladies, do not place every important documents or credit cards in your handbag. If your bag is stolen, you will lose everything.

Do not leave bags lying around in public places, even for 30 seconds. That is all it takes!

Make sure you have important telephone numbers on paper, not just on your mobile. If mobile is stolen, then you have back up.

In London apartments

Ensure you lock doors and windows securely before going out

Do not let in strangers. If in doubt call your booking agent, or the supplier apartment. All the telephone numbers would be in your booking confirmation email

Keep telephone numbers of your agent or supplier apartment with you at all times - we can help you!

Check that all cookers and electrical appliances are turned off before you go out.

Handling money

Be careful of Bank cash machines. It it looks suspicious do not withdraw money from it. Always cover your hands as you tap in in pin numbers.

Choose bank cash machines inside bank buildings if possible, avoid dark places or out of place machines.

In restaurants, shops: Again if in doubt pay by cash. Alwasys cover your hands when typing in PIN.

Quality London Apartments shines the spotlight on: South Kensington

This area is one of the most popular destination for tourists and people seeking a permanent home. The streets are not as refined as Knightsbridge or as cool as Chelsea, but it is welcoming and feels like a village. On the Gloucester Road, there are so many restaurants, cafes and pubs, the visitor is really spoilt for choice.

And if the family is needing some diversions, all of the best museums in the UK are based on the Kensington doorstep. There is the Science Museum for all the geeks, Natural History Museum for a glimpse of pre-historic dinosaurs (don't worry they are dead!) or the ecletic Victoria and Albert Museum.

One of my favourite restaurants is the very unique La Bouchee. It was a really remarkable find in London because amongst boring pizzerias and bars was this elegant French Brasserie. Even the waiters are really French, everything inside was French, even the small tables and chairs reminded me of Paris.
The food was simple and sublime. I highly recommend this place for couples seeking a quiet night out, but it is a little bit expensive for a whole family.

If you fancy a spot of shopping and don't wish to trek all the way to Oxford Street, why not try High Street Kensington. There are some very good and reasonable priced clothes shops. Many Londoners visit this street for High Street bargains.

Kensington is also a lovely place during the evening, with a lot to do, so the travellers are never without a lively atmosphere.

London serviced apartments: Why I love my job!!

I just wanted to share my happiness with you because I really love my job. The best thing in this role is to be able to help people and hear fantastic feedback. I feel really proud to have made a positive impact on someone's experience of London.

Today was a particularly excellent day because I received a great feedback. One client was moving to London to start a new job and he was very happy with his stay at the Shaftesbury Hogarth Kensington. He said thank you to me for helping him search and book a quality apartment in London. He was in a central location and for anyone who doesn't know London, assistance from a Londoner really helped.

I know that it is a cliche, but I felt really warm and happy. To top it all he said that he will tell his new company and friends about our service.

The lessons I have learnt today is that one of the forgotten rewards of any job is customer happiness and satisfaction hopefully resulting in great testimonials. The second lesson is that when a client becomes an ambassador for a company, that beats any marketing or PR.

The Park Room at Mandarin Oriental......Was our Rogue Reviewer Seduced or not?

For those looking for top class dining without smashing the budget, I would recommend The Park Room at The Mandarin Oriental Restaurant. I was fortunate enough to be taken there recently, and was extremely surprised by value of the food, given that the restaurant sits looking out onto Hyde Park, in one of London’s most fancy 5-star hotels.

The restaurant is nicely laid out, not particularly memorable, but not over done, with some nice subtle eastern touches and a variety of seating options. We were sadly placed away from the prime view but nevertheless enjoyed people watching as the place became busy throughout the evening. We were welcomed with an egg-cup-full of green tea, not that I’ve ever really thought much of green tea – to me it tastes like fairly dirty hot water, but it was a nice idea which my fellow diners appreciated.

The menu is pan-Asian without the connotations of muddled up cooking that the title usually brings, we have all the usual suspects, Sashimi, wonton soup, dim sum, Singapore noodles and of course Thai green curry (more about that later). To start I chose Tom yam goong, I think a good way of benchmarking a place is to see if they choose to murder a classic, or put their own twist on it – mine was neither, unfortunately not quite as hot and aromatic as I would have liked it, to that end I would direct you to Battersea’s Thai on the River where it is sublime, at The Park Room we decided we could do better ourselves, and that more lemongrass may have done the trick.
For main we were seduced by the £11.00 Thai Green Curry, which included rice, surely a bargain for a restaurant of this stature! The curry was fantastically well done, it seemed a bit greasier than I would usually prefer but was certainly not on the heavy side, with little gems of green tomatoes to be found every now and then. Both my companion and I found ourselves coughing as the chilli’s hit the back of our throat but neither of us had any complaints as it was a very tasty dish.

The service throughout was attentive, but not impeccable – a corked bottle of wine took a while to replace, it’s replacement spent a lot of time sitting on the waiter’s station, creeping towards lukewarm when it could have been settled comfortably in our ice bucket, and our request for a second bottle of water arrived rather later than we would have liked (mainly required to end our coughing fits). Dessert was lovely, I plumped for the ice cream, and in flavours such as malted and honeycomb it was a refreshing alternative to the usual offerings. My companion had a desire for a favourite Thai dessert of mango compote, with rice pudding – this was not on the menu but duly produced by the kitchen much to our delight, ending the meal on a high note.

With a couple of bottles of Pouilly Fuisse, water, coffee and service the bill came to about £70 a head, which we felt was entirely reasonable for a meal of such quality – by no means the best meal I have ever tasted, but I would definitely recommend The Park to anyone, ticks all the boxes but just needs to iron out a few tiny service related creases before I would start screaming it’s name from the rooftops.

Quality London Apartments team enjoys an upper crust Jazz Sunday Brunch

Finally our hard work is recognized and rewarded with a trip to town to savour a Jazz Brunch. We were invited by the talented Ian Jenner the Food and Beverage Director of the Mandeville Hotel in Marylebone, 4 minutes to Oxford Street, to sample his wares (so to speak!). And what 'wares' they were!
The waiters fussed over us and selected the best seats in the house with a great position to listen to the jazz. The room was beautifully funky with a wild palette of colours which is really exciting on the eye. The ambience was intimate and cosy, which was a delight on a sunny Sunday afternoon in May.

But firstly what is a Sunday Jazz Brunch, we hear you ask? A brunch is a mix of breakfast and lunch and is served between 12:30-3:00pm. Whoever invented it had a lot of time on their hands, because it takes a wonderfully long time to eat and drink. The jazz 'bit' is the wonderful trio of musician and singer, to serenade us while we eat. What I forgot to mention was that there was also a lot of Champagne to drink….unlimited amount actually because it was all included in the price.

The food was beautifully presented and produce were organically grown. I enjoyed the smoked salmon to start, but the piece de resistance was the roast sirloin beef with rosemary roast potatoes but the award definitely went to the Yorkshire pudding. They were the best I had ever eaten: well-risen, crisp but moist, it had depth and flavour. My partner wolfed down the most luscious egg Benedict I have ever seen. All washed down with generous helpings of unlimited Champagne. The menu is wide ranging and had many other dishes to suit all tastes to choose from.

London Apartments: Chelsea Flower Show 20 – 27th May 2007

What is all the fuss about? Why on earth would people from all over the world descend to the London Capital to see some flowers and plants. I am of course, only joking because this show has become on of the most popular shows in London.

For all rare flowers and plant lovers, this is their idea of heaven, for hayfever sufferers it is hell. The only downside is realizing what an impact the Chelsea Flower Show has on the London accommodations….namely apartments and hotels are booked up very fast. This then leaves all of our other clients fuming, because they cannot find anywhere to stay.

I think the lesson learnt from this year's experience is that if anyone needs accommodations in central London during mid-end of May 2008, please book by latest early April 2008. Otherwise, you will be disappointed.

Are you in the process of planning your summer holiday? Then please make sure you book and confirm at least 3 months ahead. Before you think that this is another sales pitch for Quality London Apartments, I can assure you that it is only 20% so and the rest is information to help you. So, here are 4 top reasons why you need to book early.

1. Flights
In the 1970s the pricing of flights underwent a dramatic change, unrecognisable from the previous decades. Instead of fixed prices throughout the year, the airline people applied a system called 'revenue management' to ensure that they can sell at the right price at the right time to the right people. To be brutally blunt, the pricing became more expensive if you booked at a very short lead, because the assumption is that you are one desperate customer, and unfortunately they were correct because you really needed a flight by this stage.
In another words, if the airlines understood the trends of travel and the demands, their prices went drastically up and down. London's peak summer holiday time is May to September, so I can bet that flight prices for this time is rising daily as the airlines know that the later you leave your booking the more desperate you will become.

2. Hotels and other accommodation
Hotels were a lot slower when it came to using the pricing strategy of the airlines, but since the 1990s, they have created a confusing moniker aptly coined 'Best Available rate'. This rate is a best rate which is different on a daily basis and follows the perceived demands of their customers …you, in other words. So if you wanted to stay for 3 nights you may find that on one day the pricing is £150, while the other night is £100. Why? Because one of the night is still quiet for the hotel, while the other is not. So how does this apply to me (you ask)? Once more, the historical trend for peak travel time to London is May to September for leisure holidaymakers, and hotels will be increasing the rates, even now as I write. Now in February, the prices are still reasonable, because the hoteliers want to build a base business, but you can bet your bottom dollar that within the next 2 months, the prices will have increased by at least 25%. The lesson here is to book now while it is still reasonable.

3. London serviced apartments
The serviced apartments industry, happily do not work in the same cut-throat way as the airlines or hotels. They have the same fixed rates throughout the year and do not chop and change daily. But this does not mean that rates are not negotiable or flexible. But the apartment owners also follow trends and demands and will negotiate if it is a quiet time, or if you are booking for a long stay of a month or more. Apartments are booked up early in advance throughout May to September because they are fairly priced with no hidden charges, hence my advice to book early.

4. Give yourself more time to research and plan your holiday itinerary, and save money in the process.
If you give yourself more time to research and plan your holiday, you can find more to do at a reasonable cost. For example, did you know that you can purchase a London Pass which gives you discounts on hundreds of tourist attractions and even save money on transport cost? Did you also know that many attractions also offer family tickets?

There are also many free events in London during May to September, which will keep the whole family happy for free. There is 'trooping the colours' in June to mark Queen Elizabeth's birthday, or the Notting Hill Carnival during the end of August Bank Holiday. Tour de France is in London in July.

London as an attraction for families looking for an exciting city break is unrivalled. There are so many exciting things to do, visit and see for all the family, a few weeks is not enough. The downside of having a break in this world-class city, it is that it can be horrendously expensive if you are not aware of money saving choices. This article is my way to help you plan and prepares the perfect the family holiday to London.

Transport

Transport in London, thanks to our Mayor Ken Livingstone is now one of the most expensive in the world. Travelling around either by driving your own car or by public transport is a costly affair, as you are either paying the congestion charge or a very expensive tube ticket. As a family on holiday can appreciate, saving money wherever you can is very important so here are some ideas for a family top consider:

1. London Underground fares are exorbitant if you pay by cash, so buy an Oyster card. This card allows you to pre-purchase tickets and fares are considerably cheaper. For example, a one stop journey on the tube can cost £4 by cash, but the equivalent journey will cost £1.50! Visit www.tfl.gov.uk for more details

2. Buy a family one day or weekly travel card which can be used on trains and buses. This card will allow you to travel within a number of London zones, at a set price. So you will not be hit with expensive surprise! Visit www.tfl.gov.uk

Accommodation

Aside from expensive travel costs, accommodation for families is also hard to find. Many hotels do not have a spacious, one room to fit a family of 2 adults and 2 children. Even if they are offered a room with twin double beds, it can become slightly claustrophobic sleeping in the same room for a week!
Also in a hotel, there is basic tea and coffee making facilities within the room, so eating out daily is an expensive must.

Another accommodation option is to stay in a serviced apartment instead of a hotel room. Serviced apartments are usually flats with separate bedroom, living room and a fully equipped kitchen with washer/dryer, cooker etc. Depending on your budget, a family of four can either stay in a two bedroom apartment from £220 per night, or a one bedroom with one double bed and a double sofa bed in the living room form £160 per night. Having a fully equipped kitchen will also save you money because you can cook and enjoy refreshments instead of dining at restaurants or using hotel room service. Serviced apartments do share similar benefits to hotels, such as maid service high speed internet.

Tourist Attractions

There is not a doubt that London has some of the most fantastic attractions for families to explore and savour. It can be also hard hitting on the budget when average price per adult is £10. Here are some ideas to help:

1. Purchase a London Pass: this card will save you money on hundreds of tourist attractions, tour buses and restaurants. The cost starts from £39 for an adult one day pass with travel, £22 for children one day pass.

2. If you are buying individual tickets to attraction try to research on the internet first, as sometimes there may be a special internet price to thank you for booking in advance. Even if the price is the same, you can save yourself time from having to queue at the ticket office.

Book Early

Try to book as much as you can in advance, especially accommodation. The peak time in London for tourists is from May to September, so hotel rates increases rapidly and apartments are fully booked. Book at least 3 months ahead to guarantee your place in the rush, otherwise you can find yourself stuck in an overpriced and dingy room.
Book tourist attraction tickets early as well, because some of the most popular ones like the London Eye are always fully booked in advance. For example, one family friend of mine wanted to enjoy a ride on the London Eye at 2:00pm, so they turned up at 1:00pm to buy tickets and was told (1 hour later) that the next available ride was at midnight! You have been warned.

Free things to do!

Despite all the costs of London, there are fortunately many wonderful things to do for FREE.

1. Visit the famous Borough Market in Southwark (near London Bridge tube). There are many stalls of cheeses, sausages and lovely food to behold. It is a very popular spot for all Londoners, so try to get there early between 8:00-10:00am when it is not so crowded.

2. Museums and Art galleries: many museums and galleries are totally free to visitors. The children will love exploring the British Museum, where they can view Egyptian mummies, or dinosaurs at the Natural History Museum. The Tate Modern is fabulous and will inspire them!

3. Parks are free. Choose from the expansive Hyde Park, elegant Regents' Park or the glorious St James' Park. Lots of open space to let the children roam while you enjoy a picnic in peace.

4. Covent Garden. One of the most vibrant markets in the Capital. Enjoy free, live music daily ranging from funky guitars or a soaring soprano fresh from opera school.

Despite its downside, I love London because it is still a very thrilling place to visit. There is just so much to do and new places to discover. It was and still remains one of the favourite destinations for family holidays and vacation.

On this bitterly cold wintry day in London, I was reluctant to step out of the office, but I had to meet the Director the Athenaeum Apartments. But, oh was it worth it!

The luxury apartments are on one side of the hotel and is within a quiet road, away from the main street. Discreet elegance is the best way to describe the décor and ambience. Entering the main entrance was like returning back 100 years ago to the days when ladies and gentlemen would visit friends for tea.

The Athenaeum apartments are cleverly split between a classic English style that is a throwback to its Edwardian past and a modern style with a twist. The Classic style apartments are suffused with a warmth, from the velvety curtains furniture covered in damask or brocade finish. Apartments are all carpeted in neutral colours and all have plenty of daylight.

The modern style apartments are a quirky mix of the 'Now' and Art Deco. In one of the bedroom, I could see a glass Art Deco style dressing table, then just next to it is an ornament that seems to come from a Saatchi Gallery! But it really works, because my eyes were teased by these quirky arrangements in the room.

But irrespective of the décor, all of the apartments oozes luxury, with flat screen TVs in the bedroom and the living room, maid service and room service.

I was reading an article today in the local newspaper about a hugely expensive ‘girl’s night’ package at an un-named 5 star hotel in London. It sounded a very fun and glamorous but at quite a price….£395 for 2 girls per night. That’s quite a sum for one night for two people, with a welcome box of goodies like popcorn. No insult intended to the 5 star hotel, as I am sure the ambience and luxury surroundings is part of the price.

But, it is January and all of our hard-earned money has been blown on Christmas presents. So, here is an idea!

Reserve a nice apartment in central London for 4 girls. If you are on a really tight budget, choose something like a one bedroom (has 1 double bed and one double sofa bed) apartment in Covent Garden for £166.88 which works out for average of £41.72 per person. Or if you have more cash to spend, choose a 2 bedroom apartment in a plush apartment in Victoria from £300 per night but includes breakfast for 4, free access to executive lounge for drinks and free gym. Works out at £75 per person.

For the rest of the night, make it a pyjama party to remember. Go to the local shops to stock up on crisps, popcorns and everybody’s favourite….chocolate.

I received a call from a potential client seeking a serviced London apartment for short stay rental. When he discovered that Quality London Apartments was a third party agent and not the owner of the apartments, his comment was: “Oh no, not another agent!”
He then explained that he has just had a bad experience with one of my competitor. After listening to his story I totally sympathised with his plight. I helped him to book the right London apartment and eventually received many words of thanks for my help. But it niggled me that some agents are giving all agents a really bad reputation, so I have decided to fight back and remind travellers around the world why using agents are the best choice.

1. Good agents are like your friends in the city of your destination. Imagine having someone who will help you to research and book a serviced apartment. Then they will also help you with free support and advice of this city. If you choose an agent who actually live and work in this city, then it will be like having your own personal concierge.

2. Agents worth their salt will help you to find the right apartments to fit your budget. Obviously, you need to be realistic as well, as London is a notoriously expensive destination. Imagine if you had a family of 4 on a budget of £250 per night for a two bedroom apartment and you wanted to be in central London. Where do you begin? How much time do you wish to spend searching online, making expensive overseas phone calls/emails before you find something suitable? That is a lot of time and expense. An agent will have called at least 3 and give you the options within 15-30 minutes. How? That takes me to the next point.

3. Good agents are specialist who has visited the apartment to understand what their customers are going to stay in, have a relationship with the apartment owners, and know how flexible or inflexible the apartments will be with prices. They will squeeze as much as reasonable to fit your budget.

4. Agents are your advocates. Good agents are on your side, they want to help you and ensure that you have a smooth and happy stay. They are your representative in London, who fights for you; act as trouble shooters when something goes wrong with the apartments on arrival. What could go wrong? Read on.

5. Who you turn to when something goes wrong during your stay in an apartment? Here is a true life scenario to illustrate the point. One of my new clients booked a luxury apartment through Quality London Apartments for his break. When he arrived on New Years Day, the apartment owner tried to fob him off (whether mistakenly or on purpose) with another different apartment with a totally different décor…not to my client’s taste. If my client had booked directly with the apartment, he would have had to fight his case on his own. But he phoned me on New Years Day, I then complained (diplomatically of course) to the apartment owner and presto! All sorted for him. That is a difference that many people in this age of automated bookings do not realise, is the human help. Convenience and efficiency is great, but when things go wrong, as it invariably does, it is the people you trust who will make that call on your behalf.

Sadly, not all serviced apartments agents follow this code, nor do they respect their customers. Conversely, there are also many great agents who are passionate about service, actually enjoy taking care of their clients and are honest to you. It is hard to know which agents are excellent and which are shoddy, until you work with them.

Here comes the 20% propaganda that I did pre-warn you about earlier. My company’s mission is honesty, good old fashioned service and service with integrity. I am passionate about serviced apartments as the best way to travel and I really love helping clients. Period.

London Apartment: What is the difference between a ‘standalone apartment’ and an ‘apart’otel’

For the uninitiated to the world of serviced apartments, let me explain what a serviced apartment is.

Serviced Apartment

A flat that has a separate bedroom, living room, fully-equipped kitchen, bathroom and can be rented for short stays from 1 night to 3 months or even longer. There are hotel benefits such as a maid service, reception. For an even more in-depth explanation please read our former post entitled ‘Everything you need to know about choosing a serviced London apartment’

What is a standalone apartment?

This is a term I have coined to try and differentiate between apart’otels and apartments. Standalone apartments are serviced apartments ran by a small team within a block of flat. Staying in these apartments, you will enjoy maid service, reception help, but no Room Service or Health Club. A number of the standalone apartments’ team work Monday to Friday 9:00-5:00pm, so anyone checking in outside of these hours will need to pick up their keys to the apartment at another location.

What is an apart’otel?

Apartments within this category also enjoy all the benefits of the standalone apartment such as maid service. The main difference is that these apartments are managed by hotels and are either located within one (usually on top floors) or just external to the hotel.
Guests staying an apart’otel can enjoy the privacy and independence of their apartment and the hotel services such as Room Service, 5pm and restaurants…all for a charge.

Apart’otels are opened 24 hours, so checking in at any time of the day is easy. Payment for the apartments are usually upon check-in.

So which one is better? Standalone apartments or Apart’otels?

The answer is: that depends on your needs.

Apart’otels in London are best if you are:

Staying for 1-2 nights

Arriving outside of office hours and want to check-in at the apartment and not at another location

Wishing to pay for the apartment upon check-in and not prior to arrival

Wanting a very flexible cancellation policy i.e 24 hours

Wish to enjoy extra hotel services

Standalone London apartments are best if you:

Staying for 3 nights

Want absolute privacy and no link to a hotel at all

Want the care and service of a small select team, who you will know by name

Checking in during office hours Monday to Friday 9:00-5:00pm

Are the apart’otels more expensive than a standalone apartment?

No, apart’otels are priced the same as apartments. All apartments, irrespective of whether they belong to these two categories are priced based on their location, star rating and length of stay.

Valentines Day...inspired by Hollywood Movies

Now that Christmas and New Year celebrations are truly over what do we have left to celebrate? Well, there is Valentines Day….Love in London. Some of you will cringe whilst others will prepare for it with military precision.

But the real inspiration in this movie classic is the glamour, parties and luxury…and that’s where we have taken our cue.

‘Romeo, wherefore at thou?’ ask Juliet, in the heartrending film Romeo & Juliet with Clare Danes and the dishy Leonardo di Caprio. At the heart of this excellent classic is that love never dies and inspires the true romantics in us all.

Last but not least, the modern classic….Love Actually. It is an original piece of film-making which is made up of many fragments showing the loves and pain of various couples. We have taken the inspiration from the wacky guy who declares his love by writing them down on placards, and thought of ways you can make this Valentine’s Day really different. Not for the faint hearted though.

I was reading an article today by Mike Myatt, who is the Managing Director of N2Growth in the USA and I felt so motivated by his honesty and clarity of vision. It made me think even more about my own vision and mission for Quality London Apartments. Questions came to my mind: such as what is our company vision? What do we stand for?

Serviced London Apartment - Everything you need to know about staying in one!

A few weeks ago a secretary telephoned me in absolute desperation. She was desperately searching for accommodation in central London for some VIPs from abroad. She stumbled onto my website, not really understading what the service was about. I think the words ‘free service’, ‘apartments’ just helped her to figure out that Quality London Apartments had something to do with accommodation. Apologies for my long opening, but it is a prime example of how little travellers in the UK and Europe know about the serviced apartment industry. After explaining the concept of serviced apartments and helping her find an apartment, I realised that I needed to share this knowledge further afield. Thus, this article is my contribution to open up this elusive industry and offer tips to travellers.

What is a serviced apartment?

A serviced apartment is a flat in a block, which has a separate bedroom, sitting room/lounge, fully equipped kitchen, your own private keys to own door. Serviced apartments can be in the form of a studio flat (all in one room with a kitchenette), one, two or three bedrooms.
All apartments enjoy maid service, utilities and a management team to help….just like a hotel. Guests only pay for a nightly rate and can live in a flat with everything they would have in their own home.

Pros: Serviced London Apartment vs Hotels

More value for money and cheaper. In a hotel, no matter which star rating, you pay per night for one room which will have a TV, bathroom, sofa and a bed. This is similar to a studio apartment! In an apartment there is a separate bedroom, kitchen, sitting room, bathroom and dining table (exception is studio)

Pay per apartment and not per person. An example would be paying £250 per night for a two bedroom apartment, which could accommodate up to 4 people, that works out at £62.50 per person.

Freedom and privacy. An apartment is like being in your own home and there is plenty of space. You have your own keys to your own door.
Booking is easy, just like hotels. The majority of apartments require a credit card to guarantee, pre-payment before you arrive and that’s it. No deposits, no tenants’ contracts.

Cons: Serviced London Apartment vs Hotels

Apartments lacks the buzz and services of a hotel such as restaurants and Room Service. Albeit some apartments are owned by hotels and offer you the use of their restaurants and other services.

What to look out for when booking a serviced London apartment?

Quality of the apartment – make sure you find out if they are clean, well furnished and well maintained. How? Check the photos, and ask if you can book an appointment to view the apartment. This is very important if you are staying over a long period of time.

Do they have a friendly and efficient management team? If you need the comfort of a welcoming face to greet you on arrival, then ask for an apartment with a reception. Some apartments provide key boxes, so you can arrive any time, but there is no-one to meet you. A friendly and small team will be able to give you a very personal touch.

Opening time of the apartments office – doesn’t sound important? Well it is because the majority of apartments’ operations team open Monday to Friday 9:00am to 6:00pm. If you arrive at your apartment during office open hours, then fine, but any other time and weekends will mean that you will need to pick up the keys from a different location.

Key delivery by car at the airport? – If you are flying from abroad to London, and do not fancy traipsing throughout London at night to pick up keys, the majority of apartments will hire a taxi to deliver your keys to the airport upon your arrival. Convenient for a small charge.

Payment procedure and cancellation policy – every apartment vary in their guest terms and conditions. All will accept a credit card as a guarantee of reservation, some will ask for 100% pre-payment at least 7 days prior to arrival and cancellation can range from 12:00pm on the day of arrival to 28 days. So, before you confirm the reservation, be very clear about the terms and conditions. Ask your apartment agents to explain the procedure to you and read the terms and conditions on your confirmation emails. It will save you a great deal of trouble and headache later.

Apartments are always allocated on arrival. This policy is the same as any hotel, so unless you are a regular guest to a specific apartment, apartments are on allocations. In the same breath, some apartments only have a small number of flats, so if you are reserving the only 3 bedrooms penthouse in their collection, then you are guaranteed that specific apartment.

Rates become more competitive the longer you stay. In this, we mean you have more bargaining power if you are staying for one month or longer. This is when your apartment agent can really help you by negotiating with a variety of apartments to get you the best deal.

Using an apartment agent will also save you time searching, but most importantly they will work with your budget and negotiate a great deal for you. Of course, you also need to be realistic about what you can book, don’t expect to spend £80 per night for a luxury apartment. For example, one of our clients had £300 budget per night for a two bedroom apartment and he wanted something luxury. For those readers who know London well, also understands that this budget is actually very small. Despite that, we booked him and 3 friends into the Victoria Park Plaza luxury apartment (£150 per night less than the usual price) for £300 per night with free breakfast, gym and access to the executive lounge. Any apartment agent worth their salt can and will move mountains to help you.

What if I don’t like the apartment when I get there?

If you really feel that you have been hard done by, tell the apartment management team and ask to be moved to another apartment. All of the apartments that we work with are very customer focussed and try to help guests enjoy their stay. If this does not work, talk to your apartment agent, if that is how you booked. Best advice though, is to ask all the right questions before you book a London apartment.

Your appetite for apartments is now whetted – how do you find London apartments?

As already explained, you can choose a free search and book service of an apartment agent or go direct to a specific apartment that you know. Both methods are absolutely fine, dependent of your knowledge of London apartments. Using an agent will mean that they will search far across their portfolio and present you with a variety of choices…all within 10-15 minutes. Agents are impartial and will only (good agents anyway) recommend the quality apartments for your needs.
You can use search engines like Google, Yahoo and MSN to find apartments. Type in keywords like ‘London serviced apartments’ or ‘quality London apartments’ and so on.
Stating the obvious but, ask for a recommendation from friends and acquaintances.
Check on Tripadvisor and other customer review websites.
